Don't disagree, but I think you are talking about a segment of the voting


public that's voting for Trump no matter what. From a tactical standpoint, if defeating Trump is the goal, I am not concerned about sparing them offense (just speaking tactically now) - no matter what I say, they are voting for Trump.

Hill managed to lump every voter on the fence into that group. People don't want to be preached at. You drive away some who you could turn your way. If there had been more enthusiasm for her among dems, driving more blue turnout, it might not have mattered. A tiny number of voters in 3, maybe 4 states could have turned it into a romp for Hill.

So tactically, there is no upside to lumping large swaths of voters together under an offensive label like "racist" or "deplorable". My hope is that everyone is going to be surprised at the anti-Trump sentiment in Nov '20, as we were by the pro-Trump/anti-Hill sentiment in '16. But I don't know how likely that is and the dems should not drive away a single potential vote.
